2012 Wethepeople BMX sneek peek

Yesterday, we drove to CSG headquarters after work, enticed by the fact that the new 2012 Wethepeople range of bikes will be on display (and also promise of a free BBQ).

Let me get the bad points out the way first. Prices have gone up, the range now starts at £349.99 for the Arcade, and goes all the way up to £899.99 for the top of the range Envy. Apart from BMX bikes, there is a 26" wheeled cruiser in the line up. I can only think of one word to describe it... ugly.

With the bad bits out the way, let's move on to the good bits. Colours change every year, and this year has gotten interesting. The colours that caught my eye were the translucent green paint finish on the Crysis and the translucent red of the Trust. It's been done before on BMX frames, but it's the first time I've seen it on a complete bike.

The price hikes on the bikes aren't totally unjustified. All the bikes across the range now come with integrated headsets, sealed bearing cassette hubs and are generally better specced.

Right at the top end we have the Envy, decked out in Eclat components. All new brake lever, cranks and new rims (called the Beserk). Is it worth 900 quid? Definitely. You would struggle to build a custom setup anywhere near as good as this on the same budget. The Envy has a more subtle look about it. Gone are the bling gold parts. Everything is black except for the polished hubs and seat post.

My favourite bike is the "glossy titan" Zodiac. Kinda looks like a high polished raw metal finish. I think it looks better than chrome. This bike, in my opinion is the best looking bike in the range.

One interesting thing to note is that the higher end bikes now have 26/9 gearing. A bold move away from the 25/9 norm, and will give a little more speed when cranking.

Unfortunately, I don't have any better quality photos to show. You will have to wait till Eurobike (end of August) when the bikes are released to the public for the first time.

Biiiiig laaaad

Confusing. Just saw this over on Defgrip, checked the Vimeo page to see how old it was and it's 23 days old. Bleurgh. Pesky "private" to "public" changes throwing dates out the window...

Anyway, all that matters is that this is yet another cool video by Rich Forne, featuring some rad dudes in the form of Jason Phelan, Olly Evans and Pete Sawyer. You also get some classic Biiiiig Laaaaad action at the start. Bonus.



Gran Canaria's been pretty big in the skating world this year (well, 2010 but you know what I mean) so I was sort of expecting to see something from there in BMX soon. All good from my point of view, certainly beats seeing people rinsing the same old spots in Barca!

Subrosa have a video up on Defgrip to go along with their Disposed feature on there. Every time I saw Miles Rogoish ride I was half expecting to see an E.T. in every clip, but there's a few less in this video than recently. Some cool riding in it!

Not much to say?

Although those shirts could spell out "HIPSTER" and be as relevant to the scene portrayed in it, it's still a pretty good concept and I'm still keen to see what Almond come up with. WeThePeople and Eclat are both awesome, so there's no reason Almond shouldn't be.

Speaking of shoes - Vans have consistently been the best things I've attached to my feet for the past few years, and - again - this combo with WeThePeople should also be good. Cup sole instead of vulcanised, but hey ho!

The BMXFU video's been getting slowly uploaded by Charlie Crumlish for the past few days/week. I watched this video around a friend's house, and man, it is long. I don't mean that in a good way either - it's probably one of the longest BMX DVDs I've seen in recent times. The 'skip' button got rinsed fairly heavily, so I can't really remember in my head which sections were good and which weren't. Despite being reasonably anti-park on a personal level, I still really like watching Harry Main ride. He's certainly pounding out the footjam variations these days, but that's not all he does in fairness to him. Jeremiah Smith also has some line-age in here too.

This was something fun I had an idea for when I went to Spain to film the Fox Andalucia series. This idea came to me one night while lying in bed. I thought it would be a cool way for people to see Ruben’s hip for the first time. I thought that the matador was fitting due to the fact we were in Spain. Then, I heard this song by Beruit and it fit together perfectly in my mind. But due to music rights issues, I never got clearance, therefore the idea couldn’t be used for the Fox vid. For those of you that have seen the riding in the 3rd part of Andalucia, this contains a few clips from that, plus one pretty funny ending one. These clips never get old to me. Coincidence?

Down at Exi yesterday, Dino was talking about a guy called Fathead, who apparently also won a pair of Lotek shoes at the last P5 jam up in Newcastle. I hadn't really heard of him before, but upon checking out Streetphire, I noticed Tom Kirkby had switched out the no longer working RTRBTN "Hitler" video for this new edit by Cleggy. It's rad, watch it!



No meat = bad back!

John put up some pics of the new WTP completes last week, but apparently they were a little premature. To set the record straight, Klaus over in Cologne has popped up a flipbook with more photos and plenty of details about the new line. Seriously dialled bikes, and I don't use that horrendously over-used word lightly. Click it to view full-screen, which is obviously recommended unless you're a Borrower or something.



I'd happily ride pretty much any one of the top end ones. Gone are the days of rubbish 1 piece cranks and 44t sprockets on all the completes around!

ESPN had posted up this 'exclusive' video of Kirk Shearer. First spotted Kirk's riding on TheComeUpBoard trying to twist El Toro. "Status set", apparently? Anyways, this edit's pretty fun, although after the "NAVY!" pre-roll ad, all I could think about was the Family Guy Navy song...



Random bit of other info - Kink's newest conquer-all rider Lloyd has now learnt flairs, meaning he's pretty much there on his quest to become one with Sean Sexitime. No idea if this'll work, but check the HD video here. Take it to the streets next!

Wethepeople 2010 Bikes

It's another 5 months and 14 days before we reach the year 2010, right?

Anyways, here's some pre-production pictures of the 2010 range of Wethepeople bikes. I've seen specs/pictures of other 2010 bikes but Wethepeople seem to be just that little bit better than the rest of the field.

So what's new compared to last year? This time round we see the inclusion of half link chains, splatterings of Eclat parts on the higher up models. Also the use of a nylon bottom bracket! So rather than having heavy bearings, you get a nylon bush instead? Not sure how well that will hold up but this is something Diamondback and KHE will be speccing on their 2010 bikes too.

The Zodiac model gets a pivotal seat post built into the frame... kinda like the Sunday Ian Schwartz or Mutiny Cosmotron frames...

The top of the range Envy gets a "polymer cassette" - whatever that is?

Well... these should be arriving in Pijin around middle of August early September 2009! You have a month to start saving those pennies...

Conflict of interest?

I ain't scared. Esc's been in the pipeline for time. Now, finally, the content's about 90% sorted, the lay-out's pretty much sorted and it's gonna be go time once I've moved Oop North. Stay tuned to the blog, or, if you've got no soul, the Tweets. Totally worth it.

Saw this on a trials site this morning, then found out it'd already made it onto TCU. Gutted, haha. Anyway, still well worth watching. It's not BMX, but there's still a hell of a lot of skill (and balls) involved in doing some of this stuff, and it certainly makes you look at spots differently.



Ashley Charles is sunning himself in LA at the moment, and he scored a bikecheck up on Ride. There's also the second part of the rad Framed series on ESPN from WTP which talks about a good few of the products you can see on Ashley's bike.

I'd seen some news about Sandy Carson buzzing around BMXFeed without really checking it out, but then I gave his site a click. He's got a new project up called God's Love Is On This Island, and it's well, well worth checking out. It's not riding related, but it's pretty powerful stuff.

1. Re-discovering "Shinin'", that Fit web-vid. Hadn't seen it in a while, watched it again and remembered it's actually got some cool stuff in it. 6 months old too, web-vids have some longevity...

3. ...some incredibly good deductive skills. The answer is 3 letters long, an abbreviation of Bicycle Motocross, which is naturally "BC".



4. It's not often I really get people talking to me about the ol' PijinBlog. Some people mention a video I posted up every now and again, and sutff like that, but the only person who ever really talks to me about it is Sam, who has now moved away from Southampton (Loser!). He'd recommended a video to me, and I'd forgotten about it entirely, so having been reminded by him at Newport about it, here it is! To quote Sam:

I've been a follower of vinyl for years, and it has been awesome to see them become so successful. It has always been one of my favourite websites, but the latest vid showcases Tom Arkus who has always put a whole lot of effort into bmx. He is in charge of the website, and has always promoted other riders and made efforts with media. I was pleased to see that he was rewarded for his efforts with a job at flybikes, but I thought it was awesome to finally see some more of his riding. Super fast, big airs and big doubles! Pundai is also a complete shredder!

5. Freedom always run cool comps and help out with cool stuff, and their Advent Jam was no exception. It's in German, but not super hard to work out the idea. Maybe an idea for Street Vs. Tweak next year? Speaking of, someone needs to step up to the plate and become Street Dave so we can get that show on the road again. Suggestions?



6. Spotted this in the comments of a post on TheComeUp, and having laughed at it quite hard thought it qualified for this. I have no idea at what point she thought this would be all that viable a solution, but her call I suppose.



7. The Andrew Jackson vid below this. I have no idea why I didn't just do this post then, or just add it all together to form one post, but there we are - we all make mistakes!

8. Christmas! Got the family thing to do, so I've gotta go pack my stuff up so I can head home to Wales to meet up with everyone, so you're all just going to have to make up 9 and 10 yourselves...
